What is Skimboarding?

Skimboarding is a sport that involves riding a modified wood, fiberglass, or foam board across shallow depths of water. Skimboarders run with the board in hand, throw the board into the wash of a wave then jump on and ride the board using their forward momentum. Why Go Skimboarding?

Skimboarding is a great way to spend time on the Long Beach peninsula. Long Beach’s relatively flat beach makes learning skimboarding easier and more rewarding. The constant wave action also provides the possibility of some incredibly long rides. Skimboarding is generally for those young or young at heartlooking at experiencing the beach atmosphere without getting as wet (okay, maybe a little wet). Skimboarding also makes a great opportunity to learn basic skills important for surfing like balance and the concept of rails. Plus all the running is great cross training for any sport.

Does Skookum Offer Skimboard Lessons?

No, it is so easy you can learn it with our 30second lesson in the shop. However, if you are taking a surf lesson with us or see us at the beach, we usually have a skimboard along and are happy to help you out if you want some tips.

Where can I Skimboard?

Anywhere there is a thin layer of water. Skimboarders can be found riding in small streams, ponds, dikes, canals, beaches, etc. Too much water makes it difficult to ride but water ranging from ˝” to 3” is ideal. The Long Beach Peninsula is a great place to skimboard because it is relatively flat and has good wave action providing varying depths of water.

What Kind of Shape do I have to be in to Skimboard?

Skimboarding in an activity that can be done at your own pace, from the slowest tortoise to the fastest hare however skimboarding is not for everyone due to the running and falling. If you don't like eating sand, better to watch other people skimboarding. In general we recommend skimboarding for the 25 and under crowd.

Okay I'm Stoked, Where do I get Ahold of Skimboard?

When you're ready to give skimboarding a go come on by. Skookum Surf Co. is proud to rent and sell Dashboard skimboards. Made by their team riders right here in Washington state. Dashboard Skimboards feature top of the line design, materials and contruction. If you have used a $30 dollar imported piece of plywood that is painted to look like a skimboard you either know or will find out what a difference riding a real skimboard makes.

I Have Mastered Riding in a Straight Line, Now What Do I Do?

Once you’ve mastered riding a skimboard you can start trying tricks. The best way to learn tricks is like spinning 360s, performing pop-shove-its, and ollies is to watch videos, (check out the latest videos from Dashboard Skim.com) Tricks take time to learn but is rewarding in the end. Also ramps and rails can be incorporated into your riding if you desire. Wave riding also becomes a possibility when your skills improve. Rates

Skimboards can be rented for:
  • $12 for the day, (back by 7pm)
  • $15 for 24 hours
  • and $10 for each additional 24hrs

Our Dashboard Skimboards retail for $140 and up.
